By the WhizCV team

A driver CV has to prove safety and reliability fast, whether you drive an articulated lorry on night trunks or a van on a multi-drop round. Operators scan for the licence categories you hold, a clean licence, Driver CPC where the job needs it, and the vehicles and routes you have actually driven.

How to structure your HGV & Delivery Driver CV

  1. Licence: right under your name: the categories you hold, a clean licence (or your points), and your Driver CPC if the job needs it.
  2. Profile: what you drive and the kind of work: multi-drop, trunking, local or long distance.
  3. Experience: vehicles, routes, drops or loads a day, and the checks you do.
  4. Cards and tickets: Driver CPC and tachograph cards, plus any other tickets you hold, such as forklift.
  5. Availability: shifts, nights and weekends, and how far you can travel to the depot.

No paid experience yet?

A full car licence (Category B) covers vehicles up to 3,500kg, which includes many vans. What you need to show is a clean licence and that you turn up.

  • Put your licence category and points right under your name.
  • Any job with early starts, lifting or customers counts: warehouse, retail, hospitality.
  • Say how well you know the local area, and whether you can use a handheld scanner or route app.
  • If you are working towards Category C, say when your test is booked.

Common mistakes

Licence details buried

Categories, Driver CPC and points decide whether you are called. Put them in the first three lines.

No numbers

Drops a day, the vehicles you drive and years without an incident tell an operator more than 'reliable'.

One CV for van and HGV jobs

A multi-drop van job and a night-trunking HGV job want different things. Lead with what the ad asks for.

How to write a standout HGV & Delivery Driver CV

Three things hiring managers and applicant tracking systems look for — get these right and you clear the first screen.

01

Put licence categories up top

State the categories you hold (B, C1, C, C+E), whether your licence is clean, and your Driver CPC if the job needs one. These are hard filters, so put them in the first lines.

02

Lead with your safety record

Years without an at-fault incident and a clean licence are an operator's first concern. Say it once, plainly, in your profile.

03

Name your vehicles, routes and loads

Van or artic, multi-drop or trunking, curtainsider or box trailer. Operators want drivers who can run their exact work from day one.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about writing a HGV & Delivery Driver CV.

What should a driver put on a CV?

Your licence categories and whether your licence is clean, your Driver CPC if you drive lorries, buses or coaches, the vehicles and routes you have driven, and your safety record. Put the licence details in the first lines.

Do I need a special licence to be a delivery driver?

For most vans a standard car licence (Category B) is enough, since it covers vehicles up to 3,500kg. Larger vehicles need Category C1, C or C+E. Always list every category you hold.

How do I write a driver CV with no driving job behind me?

Lead with a clean licence, then show reliability from other work: early starts, warehouse or retail jobs, and how well you know the local area.
